Simply Good Healthy Chocolate Bars

But first... let's talk about the primary secret ingredient in these healthy chocolate bars... coconut oil. Now in this recipe, all ingredients have great health properties but to discuss those would be to write a book. So coconut oil it is for today.
There are countless benefits to the coconut oil in these healthy chocolate bars.
And if you know me at all you know that I am a huge fan and proponent of its use in everyday life. And here are a few of the top reasons why...
Weight Loss
Coconut oil is very useful in achieving weight loss goals. The fatty acids in these decadently healthy chocolate bars actually help to take off excessive weight. It is also easy to digest and actually improves the function of the thyroid... a common overweight condition. But that is not all... coconut oil increases the metabolism and removes stress on the pancreas which helps burn more energy... i.e. more calories.
Digestion
Have you heard me say this before? Digestion is the heart of your health. Think about that. How does your body get the fuel it needs to function? Through the digestion of these healthy chocolate bars and all the other nutritious goodies you consume. Using coconut oil improves the digestive processes and that prevents various stomach problems including irritable bowel syndrome. It has anti microbial properties which also help in dealing with indigestion. And to top it off coconut oil also helps in absorption of essential nutrients.
Immunity
Our key ingredient in these healthy chocolate bars strengthens the immune system effectively increasing the healing of viruses and bacterial diseases such as herpes, influenza and even HIV.
I'll stop there for now but I could write a novel on the health benefits of coconut oil. For now though, who is ready for some simply good healthy chocolate bars? I am... hehe So, with these top health benefits in mind, here is the super easy recipe to a super delicious and very nutritious treat! Notice I said treat... not dinner. Just saying!
Ingredients
3/4 cup pure coconut oil
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup raw honey
2 tsp. vanilla extract
2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. chili powder
1/4 tsp. cayenne
1/8 tsp. sea salt
You could also replace the chili powder and cayenne in these healthy chocolate bars with lavender essential oil, peppermint essential oil, orange extract. Each of these ingredients has unique and powerful health properties. You could also add dried blueberries or top with course sea salt.
In a medium mixing bowl, combine all ingredients. Whisk well until the chocolate is smooth. You want to get rid of as many of the clumps from the coconut oil as possible.
Spread out over a parchment lined cookie sheet and chill in the fridge or freezer overnight.
Cut and enjoy.
12 servings
Sound good? Let me know when you make these healthy chocolate bars. And please do enjoy a treat knowing that this one incredible ingredient alone (the others equally packed with benefits) makes this a treat you can enjoy in confidence for more than just momentary taste bud pleasure but also your health.

Managing Stress With Diet

When we are stressed our body thinks it is the goalie in game 7 of the Stanley cup game. Our heart rate can soar, breathing is erratic, our stomach can knot like a noose (the true meaning of a gut instinct), and yes our blood sugar rises.
Making the right food choices will not make our boss a nicer person reducing our stress at work, or make our kids listen any better, however, healthy nutrition is one of the many ways we can protect our body from the hazards of the physiological response to stress. This enables us cope better, think better and make better decisions as to how to minimize the stressors in our life. Here are a few ideas to immediately implement to start taming the asphyxiating tentacles of stress.
Eat regularly through out the day: Trying to eat every 3 hours is a great way to keep your metabolism in its happy place, keep the blood sugar steady. Hunger hormones - ghrelin as an example - increase the body's stress response and stress causes the release of hunger hormones. Eating every 3 ours does not mean an all you can eat buffet, have some protein with complex carb or healthy fat. Apple and peanutbutter, almonds, vegetables dipped in tuna, whey shake with fruit - all of these make great snacks. And also remember - we often get hunger signals - when we are not hungry. Really important to drink water - don't let your body confuse the thirst & hunger signals. Short on sleep, stressed, smelling food - all of these can make us think we are hungry.
Protein... we need it for so many reasons. Our body needs the amino acids, building blocks of protein, to function properly. Tryptophan - is an amino acid that is a precursor to serotonin production - that happy place neurotransmitter. Eat egg whites, spinach, fish, turkey, soy, mushrooms - all of these foods plus many more provide a good supply of tryptophan.
Ditch the sugar - for every aspect of our health and yes in stress reduction as well. The sugar (aka empty carbs) will further increase the blood sugar level, calling in the army of insulin. Same for alcohol - alcohol causes us to produce more stress hormones. And of course there is smoking - which destroys the body in every possible way - so it would be like sending our soldiers out into combat without body armor. Paradoxically, the habits people turn to in times of stress - are absolutely the worse possible choices, as they further increase physiological stress, making the body far less capable of defense.
Foods really great with helping the body cope with stress:
vitamin C rich foods: fruits and vegetables (cooking destroys vitamin C), please eat the fruit, not the juice alone
B vitamins - pep and energy, mood regulating neurotransmitters: lean meats, lentils, beans, whole grains, dairy, eggs, nuts and seeds, green vegetables...
Magnificent Magnesium: readily available in healthy food - and many people are deficient in magnesium. This mineral is affectionately respected as the anti stress mineral. It is responsible for the relaxation phase of the heart beat, building bone and almost every enzymatic reaction in the body. It is readily available in fish, vegetables, meat, legumes, nuts, seeds - however there is a strong belief that our soil is depleted in magnesium - which would mean we are not getting all the magnesium in our food as we think. Certain medications such as the birth control pill can deplete the body of magnesium, as well as supplementing other minerals that compete with magnesium. Supplements need to balanced, not popped haphazardly possibly creating a deficiency.
There are many ways we can control stress - and diet is a wonderful option. The anti stress diet advice is also applicable to many aspects of proactive healthy living. Use your food to create that inner ecosystem of peace, harmony, vitality & good health.

Maqui Berry - King of the Superfruits

The maqui berry is a purple-hued superfruit that originated in the Patagonia region of South America. It is found in Argentina and Chile. Acai berry was once known to contain the highest ORAC value of all superfruits. However, this berry was recently studied and found to have the highest ORAC value of all known superfruits. ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. The ORAC 5.0 test is a patented laboratory test conducted by Brunswick Laboratory that measures the antioxidant content of fruits and berries. According to ORAC 5.0, the maqui berry has a value of 612,000 per 100g. The average person can understand why this berry is referred to as a "superfruit" when comparing the ORAC values of maqui berry with fruit such as apples. The ORAC value of gala apples are a measly 3,903 per 100g compared to the maqui berry's 612,000 per 100g. This little known fact has deemed the maqui berry the king of all fruits and superfruits.
Antioxidants are known for their anti-cancer and free radical fighting properties. ORAC values are very helpful because they provide an accurate understanding of the amount of antioxidants that are inherent in a particular fruit or legume. The higher the ORAC value of a fruit, the higher the antioxidant content will be. The more antioxidants are in a fruit, the better the fruit will be able to absorb and fight free radicals. Free radicals contribute to cell damage and cell mutation. They contribute to premature aging and diminished health and vitality. It is unfortunate that growing older accelerates the process of free radical formation in the body. Daily consumption of superfruits can help to combat free radicals that form in the body due to aging.
The Macqui Berry has quite an astounding history. Mapuche Indians of Southern Chile opted to use the berry for a fermented drink as it is also considered to be a wineberry. Mapuche warriors drank maqui berry and attributed their victorious demeanor and physical strength to the this berry. They were known to be conquerors and they claimed that daily consumption of maqui was the reason for their warrior strength. Maqui berries grew to be very popular and they were quickly harvested in the forest areas of Chile. One little known fact about maqui berries is that they are a seasonal fruit. They are harvested only once a year. This may be a contributing factor to the higher price of maqui powders, liquids and capsules. The Mapuche collect the fruit along the Andes Mountains between the months of December and March.
Maqui berries can be eaten in raw form if available. Since it is a fruit that is not very common in the United States, the average American can purchase it in freeze dried powdered or liquid form. The berries have even been processed as an ingredient in beverages, health bars, and other forms of food.
The maqui berry is naturally rich in antioxidants such as anthocyanins, triterpenes, cumarins and flavonoids. It has a taste that is similar to the blackberry. These antioxidants protect the body from harmful invaders and strengthen the body's ability to fight diseases and various ailments. The antioxidant powers inherent in these berries aid and boost the immune system and they even help to decrease blood glucose levels. It is a great fruit for diabetics to incorporate into their daily diet because of its knack and ability to increase production levels of insulin. There is no other known fruit in natural health history that contains more antioxidants than the maqui berry. This antioxidant-rich fruit truly lives up to its superfruit classification and abilities.

Attaining A Better Health With The Help Of The Wellness Modules

Indeed, the World Wide Web is the perfect tool to employ when in need of any information. With it, facts and data are easily accessed. Students no longer need to be in the library for long hours just to do their homework. Professionals don't have to stay late in the office to do their work. Families can have constant communication even though they are miles away. Folks can verify any info they have with just a single click.
However, with the millions of data shared on the Internet, people get confused as to what information they will believe in. Additionally, some facts make use of highfalutin words that are hard to understand by ordinary folks. Such is the case in the field of health and nutrition.
As such, several wellness enthusiasts who understand this concern came up with their own ways to help individuals easily comprehend health concepts. Among this approaches is a 12-module course that discusses the things a person needs to learn for him to attain a leaner, more energetic, and disease-free body. These modules are divided into four lessons individuals can take every week.
In the first module, confusing information about carbohydrates and how one can acquire it efficiently to boost energy are explained. Included in this section is a discussion regarding sugar metabolism and the difference between fructose and glucose.
On the succeeding parts, proteins and fats were the focus. Note that people usually have misconceptions about these two health concepts and what better way to disprove them than learning the truths. When folks know how to differentiate the good from the bad ones, they can achieve a better physique.
The fourth module, on the other hand, explains how exactly minerals and vitamins work. Individuals these days tend to be attracted to the different supplements sold in the market without them having any knowledge about them. This is a problem since not all medicines furnish the needed effects.
Digestion, intestinal health, and elimination are the topics covered in the fifth section. Meanwhile, the sixth chapter talks about the different illnesses and allergies the body can possibly come in contact with. The unit likewise teaches solutions folks can employ in case they experience these diseases. To help individuals gain additional knowledge about this matter, the seventh module centers on the sources they can read.
For the remaining chapters, the eight module delves into hormones, weight loss and metabolism. Section nine, on the other hand, reveals the tight secrets of the food industry that no one has ever known and also the right choices of food one should have. For the tenth chapter, lessons about several body toxins and the strategies to combat them are discussed. The eleventh module is all about the connection existing between the body and the mind and how they interact with each other. Lastly, the twelfth section summarizes all the other eleven chapters. This very last module confers the super foods and nutrients individuals should take to obtain a fitter, healthier and disease-free physique.

Fasting: A Fast Way to Lose Weight?

Everyone seems to be talking about intermittent fasting at the moment. It's popularity hit the mainstream after a Horizon programme featuring Dr. Michael Mosley aired last summer, but it's been bubbling under the surface for a while and has been popular with gym freaks and life extension types for years.
Now, for many people, the idea of going for a whole day without food, or even missing breakfast, it too much to bear thinking about. I too, was the sort of person who couldn't go more than a couple of hours without food; thinking that I'd faint if I missed breakfast, let alone didn't eat all day. I fully subscribed to the 'eat little and often' idea that we had to avoid hunger at all costs and keep the metabolism firing all day with regular top ups of food. I'd snack every couple of hours, always keeping something on hand to keep hunger at bay and keep the internal fire burning.
Recently, I've totally changed my approach and the results are surprising. The purported benefits of fasting are many; studies on mice suggest that intermittent fasting can help to repair DNA, reduce chronic diseases such as cancer, increase longevity and increase insulin sensitivity to name but a few.
Studies in humans aren't so numerous but show it could reduce bad cholesterol, lead to weight loss and improve insulin sensitivity. Insulin is the hormone that stores away sugar, often as fat, and keeps it there.
The more insulin sensitive we are, the less insulin our bodies need to produce.
Therefore we store less energy as fat and we actually burn more fat because the insulin isn't keeping it locked in our fat cells. Being more insulin sensitive means you'll be far less likely to develop type II diabetes.
For many, fasting intermittently, particularly the 5:2 approach, may be easier to stick to than say, for example, continuously reducing your calorie intake, like most other diets or weight loss regimes.
Dr. Michael Eades (one of the best-known bariatric (obesity treatment) doctors in the US) puts it really well, when he states that "Diets are easy in the contemplation, difficult in the execution. IF is just the opposite - it's difficult in the contemplation but easy in the execution"
The idea of the 5:2 method of intermittent fasting is that for 2 days per week you restrict your calorie intake to 500 calories if you are a woman, or 600 if you're a man. Some people like to spread their calories out throughout the day, where as I prefer to simply eat one meal at the end of the day, and give my digestive system and pancreas a rest for the day. I drink a few cups of Yerbe Mate or Pu'erh tea to help curb my appetite but otherwise eat nothing until around 6pm, which, if I have eaten my dinner at 6pm the previous day, has given me a solid 24 hours without food.
This way of eating seems so much easier than the grim slog of day in, day out calorie restriction that many diets recommend. You know that you will get to eat at the end of the day, and you'll get to eat normally the following day. It also takes the ambivalence out of it; the "will-I-or-won't-I-have-another-biscuit" thing that so often plagues dieters.
I'm simply not eating all day so the decision is made. Once you've started out the day not eating, the motivation is strong to see it through. Hunger may come and go during the day, but it's nothing horrific, and the next meal is just around the corner.
Plus, if the weight loss and life extension promises aren't motivation enough, a fasting day is often simpler; no need to worry about what to take to work for lunch, or having to go and buy something. Think of the money saved buying a crappy lunch in an overpriced sandwich shop 2 days a week if you need another excuse to give intermittent fasting a try!
Our cells are constantly dividing all the way through our lives. The faster this happens, the more quickly we age, and more division brings a greater risk of DNA mutation and therefore cancer. Fasting switches our bodies from 'growth mode' into 'repair mode' by reducing a hormone called IGF-1. This repairs DNA damage in our bodies and mops up the effects of stress. Sounds pretty good right?
With endorsements from the likes of Hugh Fernly-Wittingsall and Dr. Mercola the trend looks set to continue. Will you be trying this yourself?
